The Jewish View

Bob Cudmore on The Jewish View. Audio from the 30 minute You Tube Presentation. Bob has authored three books about the Mohawk Valley in which he discusses the area’s connection to Kirk Douglas, Sam Goldwyn, Lucius Littauer and Rabbi Bloom. Two mayors of Amsterdam were Jewish. There were many non-Jewish connections as well that would surprise you such as Ed Sullivan and Fredric Remington. This is a fascinating recollection of the Mohawk Valley communities of Amsterdam, Gloversville and Fonda, yes, Henry, Peter and Jane Fonda’s roots are from the Mohawk Valley.

From the Archives of The Historians-Episode 42, January 9, 2015 the author of the novel Orphan Train, Christina Baker Kline discusses the program that transported thousands of destitute children from New York and other Eastern cities to foster homes located mainly in rural areas of the Midwest. Kline’s novel is set in Maine and this month Kline has written a New York Times article explaining how her parents “inadvertently started a family compound when they bought a home in Maine.”
